Junior Ranger Program Personal Equipment Recommendations

Clothing
Pants
Junior Rangers wear long pants and a provided uniform T-shirt for every day of trail work. Any sturdy long pant that is comfortable to hike in and you don’t mind getting dirty will be fine.
Style: Jeans, work pants or hiking pants are fine, but leggings are not.
Cost: Hiking and work pants can cost anywhere from $30 to $60.
Where to buy: Rei, Dick’s Sporting Goods, McGuckins Hardware, Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply, JAX Outdoor Gear
Footwear
Sturdy boots are a necessity on the trail. A medium weight boot will be adequate. You will want something that is comfortable to wear all day and sturdy enough hold up to strenuous trail work. Boots must be lace-up, have a sturdy, rubber soles, and must be six to eight inches in height (for proper ankle support). Beware that brand new boots can cause blisters so if you have time, try to walk around with them before the season starts. All Junior Rangers receive a boot stipend ($75 in 2024) in their first paycheck to help with the purchase of necessary work gear.
Style: Hiking boots
Cost: Hiking boots can cost anywhere from $50 to $120
Where to buy: Rei, Dick’s Sporting Goods, McGuckins Hardware, Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply, JAX Outdoor Gear
Raingear
Keep a small rain jacket or poncho in your pack for emergencies. We’ll work through light rain.
Sun protection
Some Junior Rangers like to wear sunglasses or a shade cap or bandana (under their hard hat) for sun protection.
What to Pack
Water
Junior Rangers should carry ample water for their workday. A minimum of three liters is required for work every day. Some folks like to bring one quart with electrolyte powder to supplement their hydration.
Lunch and snacks
Junior Rangers work up an appetite! Nutritious snacks make a big difference. Bring your favorite sandwich and fruit, granola bars and salty snacks.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is important as we are out all day. Keep a bottle in your pack so you don’t forget to put it on at break time.
Backpack
You’ll need something to carry it all in that leaves your hands free to carry tools! Asimple day pack or your book bag from school will work fine.
