City Fire Marshal champions municipal code that prioritizes safety and sprinklers in residential buildings.

The American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) has named Chief David Lowrey, Boulder Fire-Rescue’s Division Chief – Fire Marshal, as 2024’s Fire Sprinkler Advocate of the Year. The purpose of this award is to honor individuals not directly involved in the fire sprinkler industry whose efforts have had a national impact in advancing life safety and property protection with fire sprinklers.

With over 30 years in service to the City of Boulder, Chief Lowrey is currently the Division Chief of Community Risk Reduction, overseeing code enforcement, building construction, life safety education, and fire investigations. It is his work in proactive fire safety education directly with the community that earns him the prestigious title of Fire Sprinkler Advocate of the year.

Chief Lowrey played a significant role in passing residential sprinkler municipal code in 2018 for the City of Boulder and is a resource for contractors throughout the city who are working with the code to create safer facilities.

Chief Lowrey is a great example of the people who serve our community; he works towards improvements locally while also learning and being engaged with safety and change at the state and national level. “I think being a public servant is one of the best jobs you can have. I enjoy working with people and serving the community and making a difference,” said Chief Lowrey.
