OSMP will close the Foothills Trailhead and the North Foothills Trail in north Boulder starting as early as Thursday, Dec 7, to install bridges for the new North Sky Trail.
The initial closure of Foothills Trailhead and North Foothills Trail is expected to last two weeks – weather permitting. OSMP plans to implement additional closures in the area in January. Off-trail access north of the current North Foothills Trail remains prohibited during ongoing trail construction. Please visit OSMPTrails.org to see current trail closures.
A contractor will use an access point northwest of the Dakota Ridge neighborhood in north Boulder to stage materials and equipment for planned bridge installation. The access point will not be closed; however, OSMP reminds visitors and neighbors to use caution to access the southern portion of the North Foothills Trail.
The new 3.5-mile North Sky Trail will provide visitors a connection between OSMP’s Foothills Trail to the Joder Ranch Trail near U.S. Highway 36 and Neva Road. It will be open to hikers, bicyclists and equestrians and will provide visitors with an opportunity to bike, walk or ride from Boulder to Left Hand Canyon. OSMP anticipates completing construction of the new trail – identified in the department’s North Trail Study Area Plan – in early June, weather permitting.
Once the trail is constructed, visitors must:
- Remain on trail to protect rare plants and habitat in this area.
- Leash their dogs when dogs are allowed on the trail from Aug. 1 to April 30. Dogs are not allowed on the trail from May 1 to July 31 to protect nesting bird habitat.
