Here’s some need-to-know information for the week

Upcoming crosswalk improvement construction at Iris Avenue and 15th Street

As part of the final steps to implement a 2019 grant award toward improving three city crosswalks, daytime construction to improve the crosswalk at Iris Avenue and 15th Street will begin on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024. Work is expected to last until mid to late September, depending on weather and contractor availability. These crosswalk projects are unrelated to the Iris Avenue Transportation Improvements project.

This crosswalk currently provides significant connections from the 13th Street Neighborhood GreenStreet to the south to the Boulder County buildings, Iris Fields ballfields, and neighborhoods to the north. The improved crosswalk will include:

  • A wide curb ramp on the southwest corner of the intersection to make north-south bicycle and pedestrian travel on 15th Street easier.
  • A northbound left-turn lane for bicyclists on 15th Street to connect to the crosswalk.
  • A flashing crosswalk (also known as a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon, or RRFB)
  • Right-turn only access in and out of 15th Street to reduce potential conflicts in the crosswalk.
  • The existing “State Law Yield to Pedestrians” signs, and crosswalk and yield line markings.

We have notified over 3,500 nearby residents and businesses of upcoming construction and impacts. During construction, travel impacts will include one vehicle-lane closure in each direction, intermittent bike lane and sidewalk closures, vehicle turn restrictions, and vehicle access restrictions. People walking and biking will continue to have crossing access at Iris Avenue and 15th Street throughout construction.

This crosswalk improvement is a result of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) Community Mobility Planning and Implementation 2019 grant program, which awarded the city funds for small-scale projects to design, improve or build three city crosswalks, including at this location. These locations were chosen in 2019 based on findings from public input, the Neighborhood GreenStreets Program and the 30th and Colorado Corridors Study, and are not part of the Iris Avenue Transportation Improvements project.
