Heads Up June 16, 2023

Here’s some need-to-know information for the week:

Boulder Police to host international problem-solving policing conference in August

Chief Maris Herold and I are proud to share that the Boulder Police Department (BPD) will be hosting an international policing conference with CUPD and Denver Police Department from Aug. 7-9, 2023.

The 31st Annual International Problem-Oriented Policing Conference will be held at the Embassy Suites. The Conference is sponsored by the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing, a private non-profit organization currently centered at Arizona State University's Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions. The mission of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing is to advance the concept and practice of problem-oriented policing in open and democratic societies. It does so by making readily accessible information about ways in which police can effectively and equitably address specific crime and disorder problems.

The chief, Deputy Chief Steve Redfearn and Dr. Daniel Reinhard will be presenting alongside law enforcement from around the world.

A digital flyer is attached. Examples of some of the presentations include:

  • Introduction to Problem-Oriented Policing
  • Alternative Responses to Citizen Requests for Police Service
  • The Power of Cutting Crime with Urban Design
  • Homelessness-related Problems in Boulder
  • A Problem-Oriented Approach to Campus Policing

We anticipate this conference will draw more than 200 law enforcement professionals, researchers, and directors of federal agencies from across the country and the world as both speakers and attendees. There will also be fun after-hours events to show off our great community. Chief Herold would love for you to attend the opening ceremonies if possible and if you’re interested in attending any of the sessions, please contact her directly.

BPD will be conducting a random drawing to sponsor a small number of community members to attend for free. If you know someone who might be interested, please have them email Bethany Ciesielski at CiesielskiB@bouldercolorado.gov

We hope you can join us for this exciting event.

Regards,
Nuria
