Here’s some need-to-know information for the week:
Update on unsanctioned campsite removal near South Boulder Road and Foothills Parkway
Earlier this week, the city’s Safe and Managed Public Spaces team responded to reports of an unsanctioned campsite near South Boulder Road and Foothills Parkway. Upon visiting the location, the team identified that though it is within city limits, it is outside of the city’s jurisdiction.
The city contacted the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the location’s property owner, to bring the site to their attention, and offer our partnership on a coordinated response and removal plan. We have been in close communication with CDOT, and they have given the city permission to address the current situation directly for expediency.
Over the next few days, community members may notice the unsanctioned campsite at this location being removed. As part of our general removal procedures, and for the safety of all involved, we do not share in advance the specific day and time the removal will take place.
The city is handling this removal as a one-off form of mutual aid between agencies. CDOT and the city are currently discussing a long-term plan for unsanctioned campsite removal at this location. Regardless of long-term coverage, we have been asking community members to continue directing reports of unsanctioned camping to the city on Inquire Boulder.
As always, we are learning and evaluating ways to improve our effectiveness. Encountering encampments on public property outside of city jurisdiction but within city limits is not a frequent occurrence. This situation has brought to light a gap for such instances, and we are committed to finding workable approaches for these areas, including a long-term arrangement with CDOT for this location.

‘Boulder Clean Commute’ pilot program launches Monday, April 1 to encourage more sustainable transportation options
The city is partnering with Commutifi, a local transportation tech company, to launch the Boulder Clean Commute pilot program. Boulder Clean Commute encourages Downtown Boulder and Boulder Junction employers and their employees to take advantage of financial incentives to shift commuting behavior away from single-occupancy vehicle trips toward more sustainable transportation options. districts to support Boulder businesses and employees.
The program intends to support citywide goals through:
- Reinvesting financial rewards back into our commercial
- Supporting employer programs that shift commutes towards more sustainable options.
- Encouraging use of Boulder’s many multimodal transportation options.
- Reducing single-occupancy vehicle trips and related greenhouse gas emissions.
- Decreasing traffic congestion.
Employers in the Central Area General Improvement District or Boulder Junction Access District are eligible to participate. The city will match employer-provided incentives up to $1.25 per qualified work trip for a total of up to $2.50 per day per employee who commutes sustainably. Employees will receive their cash incentives via a virtual debit card. These rewards can either be spent on local transportation service providers or at CAGID and BJAD district businesses. Participating employers can also apply for the State of Colorado HB2022-1026 tax credit where they can receive a 50% tax credit on any funds they invest in the program.
