Compensation may be available for some crimes

Victims of crime may be eligible to receive money to pay for expenses or damages.

Eligibility

Compensation may be available for some crimes. Victims of violent crime, dependents of a deceased victim, or persons authorized to act on behalf of a victim may be eligible to receive money to pay for expenses or damages.

To qualify, the crime must have occurred in Boulder County and been reported to law enforcement. If the crime happened in another state or county that does not have victim compensation available, and the victim is a resident of the City and County of Boulder, they may be eligible to apply for compensation.

Compensation

Compensation is sometimes available for:

  • Medical expenses and/or counseling
  • Lost wages
  • Burial/Funeral expenses
  • Loss of support to dependents
  • Eyeglasses, hearing aids, and other prosthetic or medically necessary devices.
  • Exterior doors, windows, or locks damaged during a burglary, domestic violence incident, or criminal trespass of a residence

Restitution

In some cases, the court orders the defendant to pay the victim for loss of property, damages, or other expenses incurred as a result of the crime.
