Boulder Becomes First City in Colorado to Upgrade Lime E-scooters to Safer, More Environmentally Sustainable Models

The City of Boulder has upgraded its Lime e-scooter fleet to the company’s new “Generation 4.0” scooters, making it the first city in the state and one of the few cities in the country to use the new model.

The new e-scooters, available in east Boulder, have a similar design to the previous scooters but feature several improvements for a safer ride:

• Larger diameter front wheels for better stability

• Front suspensions for improved handling on roadways

• Wider diameter steer tube for better device durability

• Swept-back handlebars for a more comfortable ride

• Double kickstand to make it less likely the scooter will fall over when parked

• A lower baseboard for a lower center of gravity

• High-visibility front and side reflectors for safer night riding, including front and rear lights.

The new model also features a swappable battery which allows fleet technicians to easily remove and replace with a fresh battery. This feature improves batter recharging efficiency and will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to e-scooter pick-up and recharging.

The new models are available in east Boulder, where the city, in partnership with the University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder County and the Boulder Chamber, launched an e-scooter program in August of this year. The program supports Boulder’s Transportation Master Plan and Climate Action Plan, which call for reducing vehicle trips and greenhouse gas emissions through increasing access to shared and electric transportation options.
