Project will build new protected bike lanes and city’s second fully protected intersection

BOULDER, Colo. — Construction for the 28th Street and Colorado Avenue Protected Intersection Improvements project has begun at the intersection and along parts of Colorado Avenue to improve travel for everyone. Work is anticipated to last through mid-2024. The intersection will remain open for travel, with the following impacts:

  • Outer vehicle lane closures on Colorado Avenue.
  • Detours for people walking and biking.
  • Temporary closures of two CU Boulder Buff Bus transit stops. Riders will be directed to board at nearby stops.

The project will build the city’s second fully protected intersection, sidewalk-level protected bike lanes eastbound and westbound along Colorado Avenue, ADA improvements, sidewalk improvements, conflict zone pavement markings, new bus lanes and transit stop improvements, and traffic signal improvements.

This city has identified this intersection as a high-traffic area with a high number of crashes. The project will implement multimodal safety improvements identified in the 30th and Colorado Corridors Study, and connect to other study projects, including the city’s first protected intersection completed this fall at 30th Street and Colorado Avenue. All these projects support the city's Core Arterial Network (CAN), a Boulder City Council priority initiative that aims to make traveling along the city’s main corridors safer, more comfortable and more connected.
