We’ve always known what research now confirms: public parks and recreation make communities stronger, healthier, and more connected.
Dear Neighbors,
We’ve always known what research now confirms: public parks and recreation make communities stronger, healthier, and more connected. While the world has changed a lot over the last two centuries, the benefits of parks and recreation have stood the test of time—and nowhere is that more evident than right here in Boulder.
Our city is home to a vibrant network of parks, facilities, and programs that support well-being, sustainability, and social connection. Each July, communities across the country celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, and this year’s theme— “Build Together, Play Together”—couldn’t be more fitting for us.
Together, we’re building a more sustainable future.
Our public parks and green spaces do more than provide places to play—they help cool our city, manage stormwater, sequester carbon, and support biodiversity. The small actions you take at home—caring for your yard and trees—are part of the bigger picture, too.
Together, we’re building healthier lives.
Our recreation centers are like community Swiss Army knives—offering something for everyone. Kids learn to swim, teens land their first jobs, and older adults stay strong and independent. It’s about helping every generation thrive.
Together, we’re creating spaces that welcome everyone.
Parks bring people together in powerful ways. Whether it’s volunteering side-by-side with neighbors, enjoying inclusive community events, or participating in our nationally recognized EXPAND program for people with disabilities, we are proud to offer accessible, high-quality programs for all. And with financial assistance available, we ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation.
Together, we’re fueling Boulder’s economic vitality.
A recent study in Dallas showed that every dollar invested in downtown parks returned sevenfold. Here in Boulder, our Civic Area project is doing the same—supporting local businesses and creating a vibrant downtown where people connect with nature and each other.
This summer, we invite you to celebrate with us. Visit your favorite park. Join a program. Say hello to a rec staffer. And definitely cool off at Scott Carpenter Pool, Spruce Pool, or the Boulder Reservoir Swim Beach—all opening Memorial Day weekend!
Here’s to a fun, safe, and joyful Boulder summer. And here’s to the incredible BPR teammates who bring it all to life.
Warm regards,
Ali
