The winter blahs are real. Joy can be harder to find on shorter, colder days. No matter what the weather brings, it’s still our mission and my passion to promote the health and well-being of the entire Boulder community.

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.” Here is what we’re doing to combat those “blahs” this winter and support your complete health.

In addition to the ever-growing list of drop-in classes at our recreation centers, we’re promoting physical health with a new Fitness Court at North Boulder Park. We’re excited that you can strengthen your body and enjoy the view in one of our most beautiful parks for free. To get the most out of the Fitness Court, download the free Fitness Court app, which is a coach-in-your-pocket and shows how to use each fitness station.

What do you do this time of year to foster your mental health? For me, winter means a warm cup of tea and quiet time to read – both can lead to better sleep which is key to mental well-being. I also enjoy the reflection time our drop-in yoga classes provide.

To build social well-being, bring some family, friends or neighbors to check out “Snow Much Fun.” We work with the Downtown Boulder Partnership so you can enjoy a winter wonderland space in the West end of the Civic Area next to the library.

You can enjoy “Snow Much Fun,” three ways through the end of January:

  • We have two in-person events on Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 16 from 4-6 p.m. We’ll have entertainers, a trackless train, kids’ activities, and warm beverages.
  • Play with our augmented reality experiences using QR codes with Instagram filters. Meet morphing snowflakes, a spinning ice skater, a friendly nARwhal, and a winter forest! Share and tag us @boulderparksrec.
  • Explore holiday lighting displays in the East end, Pearl Street Mall, West end to the Civic Area, and at the library. We have colorful lights, tree wraps, Frozen-themed lights, and starbursts in the trees.

We hope you stay healthy and well this winter season. We are very excited for what the new year will bring as we have a lot of exciting work and projects planned. If you don’t get our regular e-newsletters, I encourage you to sign-up so you can stay in the loop on the latest news and opportunities to give us feedback.

Be well,

Ali
