Plant a tree to help cool our community and build climate resilience
Help Us Plant Resilience
The City of Boulder, Cool Boulder and the PLAY Boulder Foundation are hosting a Fall Tree Sale from now until late September. The trees are grown locally and are well-suited for Boulder’s climate. Every tree planted and cared for grows the canopy of leaves and branches that help keep Boulder cool. A healthy urban tree canopy is critical to ensuring our community is safe, livable and resilient – especially as summer temperatures become hotter with a changing climate.
“We all need trees, now more than ever,” said City of Boulder Forestry Manager Kathleen Alexander. “It's important to plant, water and care for them. But the city can't do it alone, so we rely on community members to plant and take care of trees on their private property. The tree sale is a great way to provide low-cost trees for community members to help make Boulder more livable now and for future generations.”
Tree Sale Details
The tree sale is open now through Thursday, Sept. 28 at noon and community members can purchase up to 10 trees. Pre-ordered trees must be picked up at 5200 Pearl Parkway during one of two times:
- Friday, Sept. 29 between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 30 between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Trees will not be available for purchase on-site on Sept. 29 or 30. Trees will be donated if not claimed on the pickup date.
The city and its partners have also created several resources to help community members care for trees, including Tree Planting, Care and Watering and How to Grow a Tree web guides.
Trees Cool Cities
Trees play a big role in keeping Boulder’s neighborhoods cool. Their canopy, the layer of leaves and branches that form treetops, provide shade and cover from the elements.
Trees also absorb heat from the air as they release moisture from their leaves, keeping water in our landscape and people cool on hot days. This is increasingly important as climate change causes longer, more dangerous heat waves.
