Second Arrest Made in University Hill Shooting; Police Increase Neighborhood Patrols

BOULDER, Colo. – The Boulder Police Department has arrested a second male in connection to the shooting on University Hill this past Sunday.

On Tuesday, detectives asked for the public’s help to identify a person of interest. Yesterday he was identified as Gabriel Sharma, 18. Detectives arrested him on charges of felony attempt murder in the first degree-extreme indifference, felony attempt murder in the first degree-after deliberation, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct-discharge firearm. He was taken to the Boulder County jail where he is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Boulder Police worked with the Boulder District Attorney’s Office, Longmont Police and the Boulder County SWAT Team last night to execute a search warrant at Sharma’s home in Longmont. A semi-automatic rifle and revolver were recovered from the scene.

Detectives are continuing to follow up on leads to identify the other individuals involved in Sunday’s incident, and appreciate the tips received from the community. They still ask anyone with any information to call Detective Cantu at 303-441-4328 reference case 22-09880.

“We want our community to know that we take these crimes very seriously and we will not tolerate anyone who comes to Boulder to harm our community members,” Chief Maris Herold said. “We will be increasing patrols and conducting other initiatives on University Hill—overtly and covertly—as well as continuing our partnership with C.U.P.D. to keep everyone safe.”

The District Attorney’s Office will be prosecuting the cases against the defendants in this investigation as well as reviewing the officer officer-involved shooting.

“Incidents of gun violence are incredibly concerning for our community; I appreciate the quick response and the progress made by the Boulder Police Department and the other agencies. The Critical Incident Team is investigating the use of force by the officer(s) involved. This multi-agency team investigates when any police officer uses deadly, or potentially deadly, physical force. Following this incident, the Boulder Police Department quickly made the appropriate notification to the Critical Incident Team. Consistent with protocol, the Boulder Police Department does not participate in the investigation of the use of force,” District Attorney Michael Dougherty said.

Once the investigation is completed, the District Attorney’s Office will conduct a thorough review to determine what, if any, action is appropriate under the circumstances. D.A. Dougherty always releases the findings to the public and conducts a Community Town Hall to share the information with the community.

As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.
