Dear Boulder neighbors,

Writing to you in our recreation guide lets me highlight exciting projects and changes in our department. First, as I write this during our peak summer season, I want to celebrate the work of our teammates. Across the city, BPR employees are helping Boulderites take care of your minds, bodies and spirits. They’re amazing! I hope you take a moment to thank them if you get the chance.

Next, here are some exciting projects underway or coming soon:

  • Flatirons Golf Course facility – We broke ground in June on a new restaurant and outdoor event lawn for the whole community to enjoy. By summer 2024, you can enjoy scenic views, delicious food, and gather for events.
  • North Boulder Park Renovation – Play area equipment usually lasts about 20-30 years, so at North Boulder Park we’re due for an upgrade. We’ll have new areas for kids 2-5 and 5-12, nature play areas, spaces for teens, a new fitness court, updates to the picnic shelter and restrooms, and improve drainage in the park. We’re working on the concept plan now.
  • Court System Plan – The demand for racket sport courts in our community has dramatically increased. With court supply not meeting demand, we’re developing a court system plan to address current and future racket sport needs. We will share recommendations and opportunities by the end of this year.
  • Civic Area Phase 2 – We’re continuing to design the Civic Area and implementing the next phases of the Civic Area Master Plan, creating a unified civic park space in the heart of Boulder. We’re about to launch this project with construction tentatively planned for 2027.
  • New park on Violet Avenue - Located on Violet Avenue between Broadway and 19th St., this site will become the city’s newest neighborhood park. We will work most closely with the nearby neighbors for their input on park names and amenities, and all voices will be heard. We hope to have the park ready by 2025.

Each project provides different ways to engage and provide us your thoughts. I encourage you to check out the project(s) you’re passionate about and to become involved.

You can chat with Parks and Recreation staff about these projects and visit the site of the future park on Violet at the “What’s Up Boulder” event on Sept. 10 from 1-3:30 p.m. in Foothills Community Park. You can learn more about the event at bldr.fyi/whats-up-boulder.

Thank you so much for your support this summer. We appreciate you joining us in the parks, in the pools, at camp, the golf course, the Pearl Street Mall and more.

Be well,

Ali
